User Question - Siblings that are Direct Line Ancestors

A Reader Question:
I have both a brother and a sister as direct ancestors of the home person. The program defaulted to the brother with the yellow arrow because he is a 5th great grandparent while the sister is a 6th great grandparent. How can I make both of them as direct great grandparents. With this problem I am unable to do a mtDNA chart of mother to daughter etc.
If you have the relationship correct, they both will appear as "direct" Great Grandparents.

An Quick Check go to the "Brother" in the People Workspace, Person View, in the right panel, is the Relationship to the Home Person correct? Repeat the same for the Sister, ans is that correct. I am guessing that is how you saw the 5th Great Grandparent (father) and 6th Great Grandmother information came from.

You can versify this when you go to the Tools Menu, Relationship Calculator, starting with yourself as the selected person, (top field) and the "brother" in the 2nd position, and see what the Relationship is between your self and the brother. Then change the brother to the "sister" and make sure that this relationship is what you expect.

A hint may be that when you look at the Relationship field, there may be a (#) after the word Relationship, indicating that there may be more than one relationship going on.

Looking at my own database, I have two brothers that are 7th great grandfathers, both brothers have the "yellow arrow" that you mentioned. That makes me think, that in your case, you are not seeing the 2nd "yellow arrow".

On the surface, this sounds like a data entry / relationship issue within your database.

I looked to see if I had situation like you described and I don't.

User Question: List of Shared List of Ancestors

Here is another Reader's Question:
Making a List of Shared Ancestors of a Couple
A blog post on making a list of Shared Ancestors of a Couple ??  Sorry, I don't understand what this might be about. Nor what problem is trying to be resolved.

The closed I can come to is when a couple have multiple relationships between each other is by looking at the Relationship Calculator in the Tools Menu.

Selecting Relationship Calculator you will be given two people to calculate the relationship between

This is a husband and wife. (not showing entire screen for privacy reasons). The KEY here is the Relationship (3). Husband and wife, is one, but there are two other relationships that they have.

Viewing the Relationship Chart (bottom of that window), selecting each of the 3 relationships, you will see the list of Ancestors, back to the Shared, COMMON Ancestor(s).

In the example of the Husband and Wife, being related 3 times, which they are, they Share NO (zero) Common relatives according to the Relationship Calculator.

Reviewing the charts, you can see how they are related. One of the relationships is "6th cousin 2x removed of wife of 7th cousin, 1x removed".

FTM2014 - Relationship to Me

Here is a new one for me. It may not be new, but I just noticed this window.

I am in the People Workspace, Tree View and see someone in my tree. I see that this person is my 2nd great grandmother. But, who is our nearest relative.

By hovering your mouse over that relationship, you will see a window open up, for a short while, with the answer to that question.

It's quicker then going through the relationship calculator to answer that question.

How are we related?

How I found out that my parents were related before they were married.

The relationship between the person you have selected on your screen, will show the relationship between that person and the "Home" person. But, sometimes you may want to look at other relationships.

Family Tree Maker has a Relationship Calculator feature.

In my research, I found that my parents were related to each other before they were married. Here is how you can determine these relationships.

Go to the People Workspace, Person View, and click on the Tools menu. Select the Relationship Calculator.

This will bring up a screen, that will allow you to select the two people that you want to see how they are related.

In this case my father and mother. The First ICON to the Right if the Name, will bring up the Index, where you can select the names.. At first glance, is shows Husband and Wife. BUT, on the Relationship line, there is a Number 2. This indicates that there is another Relationship between these two people.

The pull down menu indicates that they are 5th cousins 2 times removed. By selecting that 2nd relationship the Right Hand Panel will show the relationships.

That's difficult to see the relationship, so click on the View Relationship Chart.

This is only a part of the full chat, but this view will show back to the Common Ancestor.

One other thing to do, is to Switch these two people in that earlier screen. There may be other, more distant relationships.

In this view, my parents are related 5 times.

Lesson Learned: I am asked many times, should I split may file, based on mother and father, or grandparents, etc. This is an example of the benefit of maintaining one file. You may miss this fun information.
