Mondays with Myrt Question - 24 Oct 2016

This is NOT a Family Tree Maker blog post.

From the 24 Oct 2016 Mondays with Myrt, our friend John Laws had this question:
Why does Ancestry add data on transcriptions not on the original documents & if a transcription looks off its probably mis-transcribed take a zoomed in look at whats actually witten down it'll probably be miss transcribed look at the 1881 census Registration district West Ham ED, institution, or vessel 12 Piece 1727 Folio 14 Page number 25 Can you see whats wrong and what's incorrectly implied?
Several of us tried to answer his question. After the Hangout, I went back to see if I could find out what the issue was / is.

The Record in question can be found here:

1881 England Census for Robert Laws - Essex, Leyton Low, District 12

This is the Transcription in Question

So that you can read it:

Name:Robert Laws
Age:5
Estimated birth year:abt 1876
Relationship to Head:Son (Head) (Head)
Mother:Maria Fuller
Gender:Male
Where born:Mile End
Civil Parish:Leyton LowCounty/Island:EssexCountry:England
Street address:1 Ebenezer Vil
Education:

Employment status:
Occupation:Scholar
Registration district:West HamED,
institution, or vessel:
12Neighbors:
Piece:1727
Folio:14
Page Number:25
Household Members:
NameAge
Robert Laws5
Blanche Laws4
Arthur Laws3
Herbert Laws
Maria Fuller66
Martha Kelly36
Mary Kelly9
Sarah Donald15
I bolded the items in question.

To make sure we are on the right page:

and the right Household:

We see the image as transcribed. From the best that I can tell, for this is the first time looking at this type of record, the transcription is correctly transcribed.

Still trying to understand Johns concern, I kept looking.

It's hard to show this, but Robert, age 5, is the Son of the Head of Household, BUT it listed where I would normally expect to find the Head of Household. So, John may be right. But, lets look at the "mother".

She is down the list, be is 66 years old, and clearly marked at "Mother" to the Head of Household.

This two may be why the question. A 5 Year Old, with a 66 Year Old mother.

So, if this was the only record I had to work with, I would probably have questions about the family.

John mentioned that he KNEW that Robert's mother and father were "at sea" during this time period, as his father was a mariner. When John said that, the questions went away.

Maria Fuller66

Would have been the Mother to the Head of Household, or my interpretation Household Owner / Renter, and that

Robert Laws5

was the son of the absent Head of Household.

Unless I am still missing something, I think that the Transcription is in line with the attached image. The household, at the time, had 3 generations, with the Head of Household "at sea".

The Recording of this can be seen and hear at

Ancestry to Retire Family Tree Maker Software

Ancestry to Retire Family Tree Maker Software

By Kendall Hulet

Ancestry is proud to have made a significant investment this year to bring valuable new content and records to the Ancestry site. In 2015, we’ve made 220 million searchable historical records from Mexico available, more than 170 million pages from the largest collection of U.S. will and probate records, among others. We’ve also introduced new features such as Ancestry Academy and major advancements for AncestryDNA.

We remain dedicated to helping people gain new levels of understanding about their lives, and who and what led to them, harnessing the information found in family trees, historical records and genetics. As a company, we’re also continually evaluating ways to focus our efforts to provide the most impact and best product experience for our users through our core offerings.

True to this focus, we’ve taken a hard look at the declining desktop software market and the impact this has on being able to continue to provide product enhancements and support that our users need. With that, we’ve made the tough decision to stop selling Family Tree Maker as of December 31, 2015.

Our subscription business and website, on the other hand, continue to grow and we are doubling down our efforts to make that experience even better for our Ancestry community.

Ancestry will continue to support current owners of Family Tree Maker through January 1, 2017. During this time, all features of the software, including TreeSync™, will continue to work, and Member Services will be available to assist with user questions. We will also address major software bugs that may occur, as well as compatibility updates.

These changes are never easy, but by focusing our efforts, we can concentrate on continuing to build great products for our loyal Ancestry community.

If you have inquiries regarding Family Tree Maker, please reach out to our Member Services team. We’ll also provide updates on our blog as needed leading up to January 1, 2017.

-----

I will post my own comments over time. As I said earlier, I have not plans to change what I have been doing for years.

On Wednesday, December 9, 2015, +DearMYRTLE and I will be talking about this topic

The What Does SHE Say Study Group, in the +DearMYRTLE Genealogy Community has homework. Imagine that.

Here is a link to the Homework Assignment:

Homework Questions for 14 Aug 2015 What Does SHE Say? Study Group

The Hangout On Air recording of the first session is here:

In response to the First Question and a lengthy discussion about Death Certificates in the HOA, I thought I would demonstrate one of those generic labels with a not so obvious feature, addressing Question 1 and that Each Fact, Claim, or piece of information can be easily evaluated within FTM2014

FTM2014 - How I use the Notes Feature with +DearMYRTLE

I thought I would share a conversation that I had with +DearMYRTLE and the use of the various Notes feature in FTM2014. I did an earlier version of this, but Dear MYRTLE always asks the question that users might ask as well.

Thank you +DearMYRTLE

FTM2014 - Response to 'You are bigger than your genealogy program

Dear MYRTLE published an interesting Blog Post

You are bigger than your genealogy program

to which I respond: YES. That is a reason why I share my experience with Family Tree Maker. I want to learn it I don't want to just "fill in the blanks", but want to get this program to work for me.

Like many, I started "just filling in the blanks" but I had learned as I started to "cite my sources". Didn't know why nor how, I just learned very quickly to be able to answer the "where did you get THAT information from". I am so thankful that I did.

Since the Source Templates were introduced to Family Tree Maker in FTM2010, I  have spent a considerable amount of time updating my Source information into the Template Format. The Templates in Family Tree Maker are based on Elizabeth Shown Mills' Evidence Explained: Citing History Sources from Artifacts to Cyberspace  I really didn't like the free formed citations that I had created. Printing a report was not a pretty thing. Using the Template feature changed that drastically. In this case, the program did the hard work, I just had to fill in the Blanks.

I also have been part of two study groups, in the Dear MYRTLE Genealogy Community on Google+, where I have learned about the Genealogical Proof Standard with the book Mastering Genealogical Proof by Dr. Thomas W. Jones.  Between the time I started to research and now, I have learned much and how important it is to get beyond filling in the stories.

What I am trying to do is "make" Family Tree Maker "work for me".

For example, the blog post I did earlier

FTM2014 and Mastering Genealogical Proof - Chapter 4 Source Citations

I think I had been trying too hard. Using the Template feature and working with Evidence Explained, (the book), the Evidence Explained website and Facebook Page, I learned how to create Citations that are so much better.

As features have been added to Family Tree Maker, I have been able to follow other Genealogy tasks much better. Research Logs, Notes on about everything (bread crumbs), Citations in the Notes field, Citations on Media Files. Now I am able to use the "notes" field to generate the Stories or dialog WITH Citations about the person. I am moving the "research notes", from that field into the Research Notes field.

After all of that, I can generate reports or charts where those Notes aren't seen where the Stories should be. But, I can generate a To Do list, or Research Notes when ever I want.

My point here, is that I had to stop, slow down, redo a lot of work, so that I could get beyond the "fill in the blanks" mode that I started in, and learn (and still trying to learn) the techniques that we should be using, then learn how to use my program to "get the job done".

Hopefully, I have been sharing this effort with you, here.

When the Mastering Genealogical Proof gets a little further, I will have at least two more blog posts about other features in FTM2014 that helps me work beyond "fill in the blanks". But again, I had to work at this, both with the Program AND the other two resources. Not to mention the Conversation with my cousin, DearMYRTLE in the Dear MYRTLE Genealogy Community.

Find-A-Grave Source and Citation Summary

This is a summary of several blog posts on How I document information from the Find-A-Grave website. Some may consider this overkill, but that is OK. I have found that this works for me.
  • Following a Shaky Leaf that leads to a Hint pointing to the Find-A-Grave website. This link will include the steps to record a Citation the shows information that shows the Ancestry.Com State Index collection pointing to Find-A-Grave. I have chosen to Cite these indexes.

Find-A-Grave Citations - from a Shaky Leaf

  •  Linking on the Link to the Find-A-Grave website, how I cite the Find-A-Grave website.

Find-A-Grave Citations - From Find-A-Grave

  • I have decided to put all of my Sources into the Family Tree Maker Template Feature. This blog post will show the steps to follow to do so, for these Find-A-Grave citations.

Find-A-Grave - Create Source Template

  •  When following the Shaky Leaf and the use of the Web Merge feature, the Source will be in the Free Form or non-Template format. This blog post will help convert the Free Form format to the Template format

Find-A-Grave - Transfer Free Form to Source Template

  • The final step, for me, is to add headstone photographs to the Burial Fact and the Find-A-Grave Fact. These are only for photographs that I take. I do not use photographs provided on the Find-A-Grave website. This blog post will show how I create a Citation for my photographs and add MY photographs to those two facts

Find-A-Grave - Add My Photos

  •  For those Find-A-Grave Memorials that I have created, below is how this is documented. Since the photograph was taken by me, it will be the Citation Media file

Find-A-Grave - My Memorial

The steps in the above blog posts can be used for non-Find-A-Grave Sources and Citations.
