People Workspace, Customize View FACTS from Person View
I saw a comment today about a feature that I tried a very long time ago, and was reminded as to why I don't use it. But, since I haven't blogged about this feature before, I thought I would do a blog post about it just to show that it is available.
In the People Workspace, Tree View, information about the high lighted person are in the Right Hand Panel and will display the Facts that you want to see in the Tree View.
Your screen may not have these facts, but I link to have the Burial Fact in the Right Hand Panel in the Tree View.
I added it by selecting the Custom View button, lower right corner of the Right Hand Panel.
A Menu will appear:
I selected Burial from the Left Panel, clicked on the Right pointing Arrow, to ADD the Burial Fact to the Right Hand Panel, and clicked OK. The result is:
I change the Facts in the Tree View based on the work that I am doing at the time. I do 99.9% of my data entry from the People Workspace, Person View.
I know that when I want to Add a new Fact, for a profile, I click on the Green Plus at the top right of the Center Panel of the Person View, where the list of FACT will appear for me to choose from.
Works for me and I know that I can start typing the Fact I want to select, while that window is open. One letter, slowly, at a time. Works for me.
These are my normal features that I use all of the time. But, to the right of that green plus sign is a pull down menu. The FACTS that are in that Pull Down Window are the FACTS that have been selected for the Right Panel of the Tree View.
So, you don't have to start typing, just use that pull down menu. When you click the "More" button (high lighted item in the above screen capture) the menu from the Green Plus will appear.
My experience with this feature is that I don't always get that pull down menu (my fault) and found in easier just to start typing the Fact name. But, it would help remind me as to what Facts are displayed in the Tree View.
So, to add a new Fact, to that pull down menu, you need to go back to the Tree View and use the Customize View to add a Fact to that menu.

Color Coding - End of Line - Not Direct Line
The earlier Color Coding, End of Line blog post was for my DIRECT Line and I used the Filter Feature to do that. But did NOT include 2nd marriages. I only wanted to mark those direct end of line ancestors.
The result of that, is that when I use the Default Filter Feature, I get to see those 2nd marriages.
There are two 2nd marriages on the Left. I can tell because there are NO Color's to the right of their name. They are my Ancestor but by marriage. The arrow points to that fact that this person was married twice.
As a follow up to the earlier blog post, you can easily see the End Of Line Ancestors as they have two colors. The Line Color (on of my grandparents) and an End of Line color.
Liking this feature a lot

Color Coding
FTM has a really cool new feature, Color Coding.
In the People Workspace, Tree View, upper right corner is a new ICON, Color Coding
Clicking on that ICON, you have choices.
I chose All Ancestors, (4 colors)
When I turned that on, The parents of the focus person now have a color below their information.
The first time I turned this feature on, I saw a problem.
I returned to myself, and looked at the Index, in the People Workspace, Tree View and scrolled up the index a couple of times.
The colors indicate my direct line ancestors BUT the color for Eliza Pancoast and John are different from the rest of the Worrell / Worrall individuals.
Below is my 4 grandparents, each with their own color. The Green dot above and underline below is for my Paternal Grandmother. The Red dot is for my Maternal Grandfather. So, I probably have some research to do.
These families were all in the same area at the same time, been there for years, but I did not realize that the Worrall / Worrell may different or the same family. Remember, in old records spelling doesn't count. I know about the different spellings, but without the color coding, I didn't realize that it may be different families.

How Do You Handle Female Names?
My friend Randy Seaver of Genea-Musings had a question about how he handles Female Names. I encourage you to read it.

It's been a while since I have blogged about this one, so here is my take on this subject.
The first thing to understand, for me, is the question of how to handle Unknown Names. My rule of thumb, in my database is the use of 5 Underscores [ _____ ]. If it's a female and I don't know the Given nor Birth Surname I enter it as [ _____ _____ ]. If there are other names for this person, like a married name, these 5 Underscores will be the Preferred Name.
My Index, in the People Workspace, Tree View, looks like this:
Yes, I have a lot of Unknown Names. and a lot of unknown Female Birth Surnames:
But, It works for me. For Example, I find a Find-A-Grave Memorial, where the Married name is provided. The husband is George McNaughten Vial and the memorial has for his wife Emma Frost Vial, I add the 5 underscores to the Preferred Name.
This is what the Person View looks like.
The memorial has her married name, and the Find-A-Grave citation is recorded for that Name Fact, but marked as the Alt Name Fact. The Preferred Name is with the 5 underscores.
When I find a Census Record that lists where the Parents were born, I want to capture that. It may be helpful when looking at other records. In this case, I use assume that the Surname for the Father to be the Surname of the person in the Census Record, for recording this. I realize that it may not be the actual surname, but I have not run into that "problem" yet. But I carry the Unknown Given Name and the Surname from the "child" in the Census Record. For the Mother, both the Given and Surname I handle the same way, with my Unknown Name strategy. This important thing is that I capture the birth location and Cite it.
REASON:
- Does not interfere with Hints
- Does not interfere with Searching on websites
- Reminds me I need to find the Birth Surname
- and when others review my work, they help Fill In the Blanks

The case of the UnKnown Spouse
Some times you will see, in a People Workspace, Person View the term "[unknown spouse]
Just above the Marriage Date is that [unknown spouse] entry.
In this case, there was a gentleman with no children, NO Spouse entered. The key is that there is that marriage date.
Clicking on the Person menu, select Attach/Detach option and DETACH
Put a check mark in the Unknown Spouse "name". You need to watch IF there are Children.
In the case of one spouse and a child, without a Marriage Date, that "unknown spouse" may appear in the Person View, but nothing to Detach.
For my screen capture example, putting a Check Mark RESOLVED that Unknown Spouse, but the Tree View did NOT Change.
I have not found an easy way to find these "unknown spouse" entries, but they usually come from a Merge.
I found this one, by running a Marriage Report, Sorted by Wife, then looked for a Marriage Date at the Bottom of the list.
There is a Caution Here. That is the Marriage DATE will be removed. So, BACK UP your file before you do this OR, If you don't like the results, immediately do a Edit, UnDo

What work have I done on this Profile recently ?
Here is something that I have not blogged about before, but should have, and that is the History Button at the bottom of the People Workspace, Tree View.
When you select the History button, hover your mouse over a name, you will see what you have done and when
According to the Help:

The Work History list in the Tree tab of the People Workspace lets you review the changes you have made and quickly find and return to the people you have recently worked on. Family Tree Maker lists the names of the last 200 people you added or edited and remembers the names when you close a restart the program
