Cemetery Report using the Historic Place Name feature

Going to take a "road trip" to Pennsylvania to visit cemeteries where I know to have people buried there. How do I create a List of Cemeteries and who is buried in each?

The trick starts with the use of the Historic Place Name feature [ Place detail (historical name, address church, cemetery, etc): ] in the Resolve Place Name screen.

Here is the Cemetery Name:

Birmingham-Lafayette Friends Meeting, West Chester, Chester County, Pennsylvania, USA

This is the entry in the People Workspace, Person View

The Place Name is entered as listed above. In the Right Panel, with that Burial Fact Selected the Pencil "edit" ICON appears. That is to Resolve the Place Name.

Clicking on that brings up the Resolve Place Name Edit screen

Using the up pointing arrow, on the Left, the information to the first Comma, is moved to the upper field, "Place Detail", and the City, County, State, and Country are searched for and selected.

This process takes full advantage of the Map feature. It shows where the cemetery is and who is buried there. But, I am going to the State, not just this cemetery, so I need a report.

Go to the Publish Workspace, Person Collection, Custom Report. Individuals to Include (on the right) and this pop up window appears. In the Find Individuals screen, FILTER IN => select ALL Facts and scroll down to Burial.

Now, in the field below Burial, select ANY DATA

and the default "Equals"  changed to Exists. That mean anyone who had information in the Burial Fact will be in the list.

In my case, there are 642 entries.

I don't want everyone, I only want those in Pennsylvania.

I select the <= Filter Out, burial fact, select Place, Does not Contain Pennsylvania.

That gets me down to 246 people, buried in Pennsylvania.

Still in the Publish Workspace, Select the Items to Include ICON>

which will open the items to include in the Report. I removed the Birth, Marriage, and Death Facts  (the Red X) and added (Green +) Burial. The only information I want to Include only preferred Facts. I then selected the Burial FACT and only have a check mark in the Place and again the Include only preferred Facts

I want the report to be sorted by Cemetery. At the bottom of that panel is where the 1st Sort is by Burial Place then by name.

Where is a sample of what that report would look like.

FTM2012 - Map Feature and Cemeteries

2012 has become a "clean up my file" year. Yes, I am giving myself a year to do this. Afterall, I have been working on this file for about 15 years, through many versions of Family Tree Maker (V3.4 - FTM2012), and all of the new, very helpful new features.

After posting FTM2012 (704) - Map Feature  I wanted to see how to work with this feature.

Up until this most recent patch, I have put the Cemetery Name in the Description field, as I have posted about in the past. With the change in the structure of the Place Name Authority, the Cemetery Name can be put into the Place field.

While I am converting the Cemetery Name AND the ability to See the Cemeteries on the Map, it's time to put the Cemetery onto that push pin.

This cemetery is in the database, in the hierarchical place format. I selected Cemetery in the Pull Down menu on the Left, and clicked on Go. The blue push pins show the town and where the Cemeteries are located. I found the Cemetery push pin and the name appears. By pushing on the Push Pin in the Right Panel, GPS entry, that will bring up the ability to locate that cemetery on the map. Selecting the correct Push Pin (Cemetery) the GPS location will be moved.

Once accepted, the Red Push Pin is the location of this Cemetery.

What a great new feature.

456 more Burial Facts to move.

FTM2012 (704) - Map Feature

While working on my Place Names, I realized a feature that I hadn't seen or used before. I don't know when it was added, but I really like it.

With the new Place Format, I selected a Town, then at the Top of the Center Panel, Left end, there is a pull down menu, where I selected Cemeteries.

Media Information - Filter In / Filter Out

I have posted a couple of blog entries on the use of the Filter In and Filter Out feature for Media Information. It took some testing to figure out how the Filter feature worked with the Media Information as the criteria.

List of Burials without Headstone Images - revised

and an update:

FTM2012: Filter Out Media - a learning
Here is how it appears to work. The real trick is what is that Media File "linked to".

My normal way of using a headstone is link it to the Citation. So, its a Citation Media file. With the use of the Caption, the filter will pick up the Text in the Caption. I have the Name of the person, in the Caption, with Birth and Death Years.

Anna Worthington Highley (1920-1986)

Any of those words (characters) will be found in the Media Information.

I my case, the Description field, for that Media File, had the words "Find-A-Grave" in that description. Because that Media file was Linked to the Citation, the Media Information would NOT find "Find-A-Grave".

However, IF I link that Media file to the PERSON, in addition to the Citation AND the term "Find-A-Grave" is in the Description it will be found, because the Person's Media file has that search string in the Description field.

Initially, I had not wanted to have the Person's Media file to have the Headstone. In addressing this specific issue, I have changed my mind (for now). That is, I will include a Link from the Media file to the Person.

To show that this works, I added the term "Find-A-Grave" in the Description Field for this media file AND Linked it to the Person (this specific one does NOT have a Citation)

The Filter In > then looks like this:

Other is selected, then Media Information in the pull down menu, Contains Find-A-Grave

The results are:

This is the only person that I have marked this way. Based on the Testing, this will work as long as the Media Description has the search term (Contains) AND that Media file is linked to a Person.

This is the People Workspace, Person View, Media Tab.

To complete this process, I am going to Link my Headstone Images to the Person(s) who are listed on the headstone. Then I can change the Contains Find-A-Grave to Does NOT Contain Find-A-Grave.

I will ensure that the Citation for these headstones have "Find-A-Grave" in the Citation.

Lesson Learned: More information on how the Filter In and Filter Out feature works.
