Genealogy Do Over (Go Over) Find A Grave Citations

I have reviewed how I had been doing my Find A Grave Citations, didn't like them, and they were confusing to me. The NEW Format of the Website, gave me a reason to Relook (Go Over) my Citations for the website.

Here are my findings

  1. Thank you, Russ. Very helpful. The one thing I have noticed recently is that the Find A grave Source lists the person who created the entry, but does not list the photographer if it is a different person. I seem to have to add that information manually. Have you seen the same thing?

    1. Irma,

Photographs from the Find A Grave (new) Website ... I use the Citation that is provided, for the Facts and the Media Files.

      REASON:
I mark those Media Files PRIVATE so they are NOT Published in my Ancestry Member Tree.

IF that was MY Photo, in the Find A Grave Memorial, I will have a 2nd Media file, with a "Photo Journal" Citation, that documents MY photo. It would then NOT be marked as Private.

      Hope that helps,

      Russ

  2. Uncle Russ, do you also cite the "original" contributor when the memorial has been transferred to the "present" contributor?

I looked at one that was transferred to me and looking at the citing, the original contributor was not listed. I was listed as the present manager.

Thanks, I have learned a great deal from your blogs.

    1. I really would rather YOU use your name so that I can address your question to YOU.

I use the Citation that is Presented in the New Find A Grave website, Right, wrong, or indifferent. I don't change it.

  3. I was asked about Citing Photos, from the Find A Grave website. I may cover that later, but, the Photos from the Find A Grave website are for My Use only and mark them Private in Family Tree Maker so that aren't seen in my Ancestry Member Tree. The only headstone photos I put in my Ancestry Member Tree (not marked private) are ones that I take. I will do a Video on how to do that, as well as how I Cite the Cemeteries

  4. I think I've watched this 5 times or so. Thank you. Can you tell me how you reformatted the source template? I understand perfectly, now, how to do the old one but I can't see how to alter one to put the database first and then the compiler.

    1. Judy,

You do NOT "reformat" a Source Template. You SELECT a Source Template.

Once you selected it, then you Paste the Citation from the New Find-A-Grave website, into the Citation Detail Field.

I think I explained all of that in the Video.

  5. I've watched it again. I hope I got it this time. You "reformatted the CITATION" based on your "new source group". You took your previous citation & "brought it into the new source group." Did you select a different source template or continue with "Online Database (Cemetery Derivative) and just simply the creator info from those two fields?

    1. Judy,

ALL of my Citations for the NEW Find A Grave Website are in the SAME Source Groups.

The change was from Citing the Contributor to Citing the Web Site, which is how I should have done it in the beginning. (when I didn't know any better on the old website).

The CITATION / Reference Notes, put into the Citation Detail field, has the Contributor included.

That entry is a Copy / Paste DIRECTLY from the Find A Grave Website, into the Find A Grave, Compiler, Source Group, using that Online Database (Cemetery Derivative) Source Template.

  6. Cousin Russ, thanks so much for these videos about how to handle Ancestry Find A Grave Index hints. As a new FTM user, I am learning from you about how to use the program in the best way possible. Much appreciated!

  7. Greetings:
I’m finally getting around to entering citations for my many headstones. I recently came back from Bristol, Rhode Island where I plotted maps of family headstones along with plot and sections....32 headstones. Most of the headstones are on FindAGrave.
I found that many had several names(couples and children from another marriage) on the headstone, in particular 12 names on a HUGE stone for NAPPI family, plot.
How would one cite that headstone?

    1. Hugh,

This blog post and video answers your question, IF you are talking about an image of a Headstone from the Find A Grave website.

IF you are talking about a picture YOU took, You would craft is Photo Journal Citation. I did a blog post on that.
