Creating an Ancestor List ("Ahnentafel") in Legacy Family Tree 7.5
As Randy points out "Each program does this differently, with somewhat different result". He has posted the above on Legacy Family Tree 7.5, and will post other programs version.
For the purpose of this blog post, I will generate a 12 Generation Ahnentafel Report from FTM2012.
We start by selecting the focus person. As Randy did, I selected myself. Going to the Publish Workspace, selecting the Genealogy Reports Collection, there are two Genealogy Reports, I am selecting the Ahnentafel Report.
When that is selected the report will start to generate. However, I can continue to select what is to be included or not included in the Report.
The first is to select 12 Generations, and the formatting of the report are also available in the Right Hand Panel.
Note the ICON outlined in Red. That is the Items to Include option. Will return to that in a moment. The Aa is the Font Selection, Header/Footer options is the next ICON, Page Set up, and Save reports follow. For this report, I set the Report Title, Page Numbers, and Date, will be on each page.
This report, 12 generations is 89 Pages in length. 4 generations, for example were 6 pages in length.
Here is a piece of that report for my Grandparents.
Under that last line begins the listing of their children, with the same information for each person. Generation 2, for this report, would have been that of my father, who would have been the first child listed, as he was their oldest child. Generation 1, would have been myself.
For this report, only basic Birth, Marriage, and Death information was included. The parents of each is listed in the text for that person. The marriage information is included with my grandfather, which included that my grandparents were married at the Birmingham Friends Meeting, in West Chester, Pennsylvania.
But, what about Source Information. We can add that but returning to the Items to Include ICON.
This is also the screen where the other Facts / Event information can be added. For this example, the basic information is included but have added "include sources".
What that does to the report is this:
This is information on be Great-Grandparents. I have hi-lighted the EndNote numbers. The 89 page report is now 136 pages, with 806 Citations. Here is a same of EndNotes 43, 44, and 45.

That is a long report... I can't imagine what it must look to have that much information on so many generations. But does that only include direct ancestors and, if so, why is it that large a document?
ReplyDeleteJay,
DeleteThere are a lot of people in 12 generations, and I do have information on many of my direct ancestors in those 12 generations. I did not count how many people would have been in that report.
Russ
How does one create html files for placement on a website please?
ReplyDeleteMarcus,
DeleteThere is a "Share" ICON, on the Publish Workspace, where you can export to HTML.
Russ
Russ, Is there a way you can add children to Ahnentafel report on all generations.
ReplyDeleteUnknown,
DeleteChildren will be there automatically, as long as you had the correct number of Generations selected when generating that report.
If they aren't there, as you expect, check the Relationships
Russ
Russ, thank you Frank Patnaude
DeleteRuss, What program are you recommending since FTM is dying? I saw one called Family Historian V6 from England. I am having problems in FTN 2011-14 producing descendants reports as my files are 22k in size..
ReplyDeleteThanks, Frank
Frank,
DeleteFamily Tree Maker is very much a live and well. Software Mackiev purchased the program from Ancestry in 2014, just after Ancestry announced that they were not going to support is any longer. You are way behind the times.
I FTM2017 is the post current version of the program, and I will say the most stable of any version of the program.
Oh, and Software MacKiev is NOT new to Family Tree Maker, as they developed the Mac version of the program for Ancestry.
Russ
Russ, Thank you for the great information. Do you know if FTM2017 can produce extremely large descendants reports. That is where I am having problems with the amount of generations list. I have left it run for 24 house and never produced one page of the report. It seems I can only get 6 generations on the report.
ReplyDeleteUnknown,
DeleteAre you running fTM2017 ?
Can FTM2017 run large descendant reports, yes.
Russ
Russ, I do appreciate you come to Odenton a few years back and giving the lecture on Family Tree Maker. Several members still talk about it at the meetings.
ReplyDeleteFrank
Frank,
DeleteI had a blast. Learned some tips and tricks since then.
Thank you,
Russ
Russ
ReplyDeleteI am in the process of ordering it. I have used FTM2011, 2012 and 2014 under Windows 7 they worked like a charm. Under Windows 10 is when the problem showed up.
Frank
Frank,
DeleteFTM2017 works great with Windows10
Russ
Russ,
DeleteMy Cousin Kelly in Texas and I have been trying to run the descendants report for the Patenaude. Kelly has 48K report and mine is 23k. It will not run all of the generations for either of us. The only way is to cut the report into smaller generations to run the reports and they work fine, however the generations are off as each report starts with Generation 1. I am researchin Family Historian to see what it can do.
Thanks for all of your help
Frank
Frank,
DeleteWhat version of Windows are you running?
What version of Family Tree Maker are you runnning?
What is the number of Generations that you are requesting? (see blog post image)
Any Error messages ?
How many generations are showing in the Report?
Russ
Russ,
DeleteI am Windows 10
FTM 2011 and FTM 2017
13 Generations
No error messages, keeps scanning for gathering info
Only 6 generations show up
Thanks,
Frank
I just rand an 8 generation Descendant Chart and it's 216 pages. Upped it to 9 generations, 276 pages
Delete1447.77 X 12.9 in size
Russ
Frank,
ReplyDeletePlease check the Relationships in the 5th and 6th Generation. Remembering that you should see a "+ sign for those married persons with Descendants for them to show up in the 6th or 7th (the Next) Generation
This may be a relationship issue
Russ
Sorry 6th or 7th Generation
ReplyDeleteRuss
DeleteAll other charts are fine. I ran the Ahnentafel from my granddaughter back to the original person and it works fine. The only report is the descendant report. That is why it is confusing
Frank
Frank,
DeleteHow do you know what is and isn't being displayed in the Descendant CHART ?
What is the SIZE of the Chart and Number of PAGES
As I demonstrated in my most recent reply, I was NOT able to duplicate your issue
Russ
Russ,
DeleteI ran the Outlined Descendants Report and all generations are there including my who family down to our granddaughter. The problem is with the Descendants Report under Genealogy Reports. The report I ran was 400 pages. All the defective one were around 155 pages.
Frank
I never run the descendants chart as my hous is not big enough to lay it out and tape it together.
DeleteFrank
DeleteReport or CHART ?
Now you are confusing me.
What ran 400 pages
What do you mean by Defective one, being 155 pages.
An Outline Descendant Report shows every one?
I too the same CHART and created a Descendant Report and it was 92 pages. The Generation setting was 9 and I got 9 generations.
Still can't duplicate the problem that you seem to be having.
You need to be more specific if that isn't want you are seeing.
What is the LAST Generation Number in the Report and does that Match the Option for Number of Generations.
In the Generation before the LAST one that you see, are there numbers in front of the Children's name? NOT Roman Numerals, but numbers
Russ
Russ,
DeleteThe report was 400 pages. Defective one is the reports that did not complete all the generations. Last generation number in the report was 8. Some of the children are there with no numbers.
I hope you are sitting down for this one.
I brought out my Windows 7 Computer and installed FTM2006. Copied the database file over and ran the Descendants Report and put the generations at 99. It ran flawless and now I am able to send out the Descendants report with all 13 generations. Thanks for all of your help. I still feel the problem is between FTM and Windows 10
Frank
Frank
DeleteHave you checked your Windows10 Updates, including checking the Update History for a Failed installation of an update?
Do that first.
If you are up to date AND have NO Failed updates, Go to the Live Chat and report this.
https://www.mackiev.com/techsupport/ftm/livechat.html
I think the issue is on your computer. But, what do I know.
Russ
Wait. HOW did you Copy the file over and have it run on your Windows7 Version FTW2006 ?
DeleteRuss, I will check some of the things out and see what they say. My cousin in Fort Worth Texas is having the same problem.
ReplyDeleteI did it the old fashion way, made a GEDCOM on Win 10 FTM 2011 and brought into the Win 7 FTM2006. We have always done GEDCOM as backup.
Thanks,
Frank
Frank,
DeleteIn the LAST Generation in that Report, in FTM2017, were there numbers, nor roman numerals, to the Left of Childrens Names?
What was that Last Generation
AND
What was the number of Generations in the Right Panel. I asked before, but don't think you answered those specific questions.
Russ
Russ,
ReplyDeleteThe numbers alongside of the children connected them back to their parents. I went through my database and the report generated in 2006 and all the information is there.
Thanks,
Frank
Frank,
DeletePlease answer my questions. I dont care about Version 2006
Russ
Russ,
ReplyDeleteThe number I gave you was from the messed up Desendants Report and that number shows the parents but no numbers for the children. They are listed under the parents name with no numbers because the report never got beyond 8 generations and there are 13 generations in my immediate family. Hope helps Frank
Frank,
DeleteI am still not able to duplicate this problem.
Have you Compacted and Backed up that file?
If you have AND you know you have Children for the Parents in that 8th Generation, the go to Live Chat.
Russ
Frank,
DeleteDo you have an update on this problem ?
Russ
Hi--I am trying to make a very simple Ahnentafel that just lists the names and (Birth-Death) dates. Even though I keep selecting the barest details to be included, the report is still 65 pages long. Is there some way to get it even simpler? FTM insists on giving me locations and marriages and this is not what I need. Thanks!

ReplyDeleteDid you check the Items to Include botton, at the top left side of the Right Hand column ?
