FTM2014 - Publish a Anniversary List

I have a Genea-Blogging friend, Bill West, who daily, celebrates an ancestors birthday or anniversary list on Facebook. What a great way to remember his ancestors. Please visit his Blog at:

 Up until now it was not very easy to generate anything that I could use, to match what he does.

One of the new features in FTM2014 is the ability to generate a number of "lists". So I went to the Publish Workspace and selected Calendar.I have used this feature before, but always had an issue when going beyond my immediate family that included more than the living family

  
 I then clicked on Generate Report and this screen came up

When the screen first opened, there weren't many people there, because there were only a few people listed, so I clicked on All Individuals.

As noted before, not everyone was there. But I thought this was fixed???

But then I remembered the Feature, Birthday LIST.

I clicked on the Collection Tab, at the top, and selected Person Reports, as there was a List of Individuals there. FTM2014 - Summary of Person Reports

What is in the Right Hand column is the details.

• The List of Individuals Report offers five different report formats
• Index of Individuals - Lists all of the people in your tree
• Index of Individuals with ID's - Includes Person IDs and Relationship IDs
• Anniversary List - Shows the marriage date and anniversary for each married couple
• Birthday List - Shows the birth date and age for earch person
• Contact List - Shows the address, email, and phone number for each person

 I wanted an Anniversary List of every one in my Tree.

Generating the Report button on the right brought up a report. There is a pull down menu, called List Type which offers those options listed above. I had selected Anniversary List

There are many options on this screen, on the Right. Who do you want in the report, which works the same way as previous versions of Family Tree Maker (Immediate Family, Extended Family, All Individuals, Selected Individuals)

Only Living People were in the report, so I removed the check mark in the Include only living people.

So now, I can do as Bill does.

FTM2014 - Summary of Relationship Reports

In the Family Tree Maker Publish Workspace, several Relationship Reports are available to use. When you select a Report in the Collections view, in the Center Panel, a description of the report opens in the Information or Right Hand Panel. You can click Detail to view, format, and print the report.

FTM2014 - Summary of Person Reports

In the Family Tree Maker Publish Workspace, there are several Person Reports for viewing the information on people in your tree. When you select a chart in the Collections view, in the Center Panel, a description of the report opens in the Information or Right Hand Panel. You can click Detail to view, format, and print the chart.

FTM2014 - Summary of Charts

In the Family Tree Maker Publish Workspace, there are several charts for viewing the information in your tree. When you select a chart in the Collections view, in the Center Panel, a description of the chart opens in the Information or Right Hand Panel. You can click Detail to view, format, and print the chart.

FTM2014 - File, Export Branch

I just posted the new FTM2014 feature for Exporting a Branch. In that post was a caution, written in RED.  The Blog Post is here:

FTM2014 - Export Branch

Suppose that I ONLY wanted to share the Descendants of John Worthington Jr, and not his ancestors and not the branch down to me. John Jr is Capt John's oldest son, I am descending from the youngest son. For this example, I am only going to share the Descendants of John Jr.

Start with the File Menu, from any workspace, and select Export

That will bring up a screen where we have options. The default is Entire file. We also have options on what to include:

• Privatize living people
• Include private facts
• Include private notes
• Include media files
• Include private media
• Include tasks
• Include only items linked to selected individuals

NOTE about that last item. That is important because IF you do not have a check mark there, ALL sources will be included in that exported file. So, there will be Sources that are not linked to anyone.

But, we want Selected Individuals.

We are going to select John, and click on the Descendents button in the center, and that will put 964 of the 8,934 people into this new file. Not listed in the other Branch Export blog post, but that new Branch file had 2,713 people in it.

That will return us to this screen with the selected people on the Left, the information in the right.

Before the OK is selected, there are some OUTPUT FORMAT options to look at, depending on what program, or version of Family Tree Maker, the receiving person is using. For Family Tree Maker version 2006 or Version 16 or earlier, the GEDCOM 5.5 would be selected.

Technical Note here: IF GEDCOM 5.5 is selected and that 'include media files' is selected. the GEDCOM file will NOT include the media files, only LINKS to those media files. The Media Folder would have to be sent to the person receiving the GEDCOM file, so that the receiving program could find the media files, if that program or version can link to Media files.

We are asked to name the file, and Family Tree Maker will add the correct file extension. In this case (FTM2014 and previous) the file will be a BACKUP file. So the receiving person would do a File, Restore within Family Tree Maker.

The processing window opens:

When complete, the Export complete window will appear.

FTM2014 - Export Branch

One of the New Features in FTM2014, is an easier or improved way to Export a Branch of your family file.

Before I start, this is different from the File, Export feature or that was discussed here:

 This new feature is different. To Quote from the Help menu:

To export a branch

The Family Tree Maker Export function lets you easily export the entire project you are working with in a number of different formats. If you want to export a portion of the project, you can do that by creating a filter to select the individuals you want to include. However, if you want a quick way to export a branch of your tree, you have the option of exporting those people from the Pedigree View.

Note: The branch of a tree includes the selected person's spouse, descendants and their spouses, and all of the person's ancestors and their spouses, descendants, and ancestors, not including the ancestors and descendents of spouses.

1. From the Generations panel in the People Workspace, right-click the person you want to be at the base of the branch and select Export Branch. The Export Branch wizard opens.
   
2. Make sure that the correct person is selected in the list.
   
   If the person you want as the root of the branch from is not selected, you can use the Name field to search for and locate the correct individual. Export Branch will include only the ancestors of the selected person.
   
3. Click Next.
   
4. Click the Output format you want to export to. You can select from a previous Family Tree Maker format or the GEDCOM format. See Export Branch: File Details.
   
5. Type a name for the exported file.
   
6. Select the options you want to include in the export file.
   
7. Click Next. The export process begins and a status screen opens.
   
8. When the export has completed, click Next. The final screen lets you specify what action you want to take with the exported file. See Export Branch: File Action.
   
9. Select any actions you want to run when you close the Export Branch wizard. You can select any number or none of the actions to perform.
   
10. Click Finish.

Below is that process.

Lets say that you have just come in contact with a "new cousin" and you want to Share the information of that BRANCH to this new cousin. You DON'T want to share everyone in your file, and this new cousin is also using FTM2014.

Since this is a collaboration project with this new cousin, this new feature will show my connection to our common ancestor, Capt John Worthington. The File, Export feature would only go from John Worthington Jr and his descendants.

From the People Workspace TREE View, you select the top person in that branch that you want to share. For my example, I am descended from the Youngest son of John and Sarah Howard Worthington (Capt. John). I select John Worthington Jr, and RIGHT CLICK on his name.

In this case, I note that John Worthington Jr has two wives. Want to make sure that is in the new file. That is what I want to do, Create a NEW file with everyone and all of the information related to the descendants of John Jr.

Selecting Branch, I am asked to Select the Name of the Person who is at the root (top) of that branch. Note, that I can change that choice here.

 I then select Next.

I am now asked a series of Options.

• Privatize living people (includes only names of living people)
• Include private facts
• Include private notes
• Include media files
• Include private media
• Include tasks

I could rename the file here, but I'll leave the default, as it is clear.

I really want some help on this branch. I have done a lot of research but I want the new cousin to help me, so I am provided all that I have. BUT, I do have those options. I have selected everything except the Privatizing of living people. This new cousin is not yet in this branch, but one of the parents is. I really want to get that new information. BUT I have total control over what is shared. AND I don't have to use the Privatize feature in the File Menu. All right here.

The export begins:

And it concludes. Note the "proposed" filename. That's what I want. I'll have a chance to change it later, if I want.

More choices.

Open new branch in Family Tree Maker
Open branch file location
Attach branch file to an email message (with a file size warning)

I am choosing to Open this new file (Branch) when this is done. I click Finish.

Here is where I could change the filename IF I want. I'll leave it as it is. I have my file naming settings, but I'll make the file name as clear as possible for sharing.

The new file is Generated;

And, FTM2014 opens with the new file.

The new file is good, and I verified that both of John Worthington Jr's wives were included as well as 281 Tasks (To Do List) that I am working on.

Perhaps this new cousin will help with that.

FTM2014 - What's New (from the Help Menu)

We have seen the advertizements, but what does FTM2014 say in the Help Menu about What's New.

From anywhere in FTM2014, click on Help, then Help for Family Maker, OR, like most Microsoft Windows program, hit the F1 Key.

That will bring up the next window where we select What's New in Family Tree Maker and Display in the lower right of the Left Hand Panel.

Here is what it says:

What's new in Family Tree Maker

Family Tree Maker works hard to make family history welcoming and fun. To achieve this, we are constantly improving the product and introducing features that make working with and sharing your family history easier. This section outlines the new features we are introducing with this release.

General

• A tree menu has been added to the Workspaces Toolbar so you can easily switch between trees from any workspace.
  
• The Name Index Options for the Index and Index of Individuals is now available from the Options dialog box and apply globally (Options: Names/Dates/Places).
  
• Colors and layouts have been modified for readability and ease of use.

Plan

• The Plan Workspace has been redesigned to make it easier to start a new tree and manage existing linked and unlinked trees (To start a new tree).

People

• A vertical Family View has been added to the Tree tab. The Family View displays three ancestor generations above the root person and two descendant generations below. Siblings, aunts and uncles, and nieces and nephews are also included (To navigate in the Family view).

• Attaching and Detaching people in the tree has been made more simple and intuitive.
• The Source Citation list in the Person tab now includes a thumbnail if a media file is attached to the citation.
• Children in the Family Group panel can be automatically sorted by age on a family basis or globally (To arrange the order of children).

Media

• A Magnifier tool is now available in the Media Detail viewer (Media Detail).
  
• The Media Detail dialog box now includes a Notes tab.
  
• The Media Detail viewer now displays the contents of PDF files.
  
• Thumbnails of PDF files now display the first page of the document.

Sources

• The source icon indicates which sources are based on templates.

Publish

• A List of Individuals report is now available that lets you create a list of people by name, reference number, anniversary date, birthdate, or as a contact list (List of Individuals Report).

FTM2014 - Place Name Importance

I was reading my friend, Randy Seaver's Blog on FTM2014 with a great deal of interest:

Early in the blog post he says "bug" and later

then this is a serious bug in the program that can probably be easily fixed in a later release.

A note like that got my attention. BUT, I read his complete blog post and the FIRST thing that caught my attention was GEDCOM. RED FLAG. Now, he and I have successfully exchanged GEDCOMs before. But the flag was out there waving in the air.

In his first image was, what I thought was the answer, AND since he just opened the GEDCOM in FTM2014 told me what the problem is and how to resolve it. The issue is Un-Resolved Place Names. In order to take advantage of the Map Feature (and this is NOT a FTM2014 problem, as it's been this way before) your Place Names MUST BE Resolved. I can't tell from Randy's screen capture, but if he looks at many of his place names, there will be NO GPS coordinates in the upper right corner of the Places Workspace, and the ICON to the Left of the Place Name will have a "?? in it. That is the Unresolved Place Name ICON.

Here is an example from MY file. I have a Place in the Center of the country, and in the Right Hand Column it has Aubrey, KS (no USA), and the bottom ICON is somewhere, probably at 0 by 0 GPS. It is there because of Scots Ford, MO (no USA). This is pretty close to what Randy has in his Blog Post.

A little more about this Map. I was tracking the movement of my Great Grandfather in the Civil War. I created a "person" 11th Calvary Regiment, Kansas. I wanted to use the Map Feature. So, each battle was listed. I used the Resolved Place name option as much as I could. I have not been able to specifically locate several of these battles (yet). So, I left them UnResolved. The two indications is that the 1) State is 2 characters and no USA, and 2) the Question Mark to the Left of the Place name.

The first location, must be pretty close, but that 2nd one, not so close, at least in Bing Maps.To illustrate that first location, there is a check mark to the Left side of the Place Name in the right hand column.

Now, I do have 2 locations that have been Resolved. USA on both locations, Check Mark in the Place Name on the Left and I selected those two places in the right hand panel.

Lesson Learned: When you import a GEDCOM file, from anywhere, you WILL have clean up work to do. That goes from FTM2014 (or any version) to other Genealogy Database Management programs. At least that has been my experience.


From another file, here is the map of another Civil War soldier. From Baltimore Maryland, was at Gettysburg and wounded, caught up to his unit a number of months later, and was shot a 2nd time, then returned home. I have more details, but am only illustrating the usefulness of the Map feature, focusing on a Person and where they had events / facts.

Introduction to Family Tree Maker Version 2014

Having done blog posts for a number of versions of Family Tree Maker in the past, I thought that I would share my plan for FTM2014.

At the top of the blog, are links to articles for FTM2012, FTM2011, FTM 2010. Selecting one of those links, I have attempted to collect on that page blog posts by Workspace for that Version of the program. In order to save space in the menu, I have dropped the links to FTM2008 and FTM2009. Those articles are listed in the Right Column already. I don't have control over the order in which they appear in the Category Listing. That is why I created these Version pages.

In the center of the list, is a link to those Training Resources, as well as Help links for the program.

These Version pages will be updated by the Categories / Tags that are on the individual postings. I have attempted to capture all of the Blog posts for FTM2014. Generally, they will be by Workspace, within the program. Selecting one of the links below, should give you a list of Blog Posts for that Workspace.

Please remember that you can Search the Blog for articles on your topic. Try to use one word as the keyword. Blog posts are listed with the most recent at the top or beginning of the list.

I am currently working blog posts by Workspace, focusing on new features that have not been available in the past, followed by changes or updates to existing features, then other blog posts as I see Questions or Issues that can be best explained in a Blog Post.

There are many features in FTM2014 that have been discussed in previous blog posts. Those are not on the top of my list of blog posts. If you are looking for something specific, check previous versions of Family Tree Maker, starting with FTM2012 and working back to FTM2008.

The plan is to break the articles down to these workspace. The FTM2014 Version page will be updates as the posts are made. This list will not be updated and there are no links below to articles. This is for planning purposes.
